FREE GEEK is a non-profit organization that recycles used technology and provides computers and education to those in need in exchange for community service".

Free Geek does most of this work with volunteers. The volunteers disassemble the donated equipment and test the components, which are either recycled as electronic scrap or recycled into refurbished systems. These refurbished computers are then loaded with Open Source Software, such as Linux, Open Office, and other free software.

What We Do

  • Recycling, Any computer equipment, working or not, can be donated to FREE GEEK-PENN; we will repair and reuse what computers we can. Non-functioning computers and scrap will be recycled responsibly.
  • Steel is sold to Ephrata Recycling
  • Obsolete monitors and terminals are processed through Lancaster Solid Waste Management
  • Circuit boards and processors are sold for precious metal recovery

FREE GEEK-PENN works with companies and government organizations that we are confident are handing the materials in an environmentally responsible manner.

  • Computer Education, training volunteers and clients; If you are looking to beef up your resumé or need a longer-term internship for a school requirement, these job descriptions may interest you.
  • Computer Adoption Program, which provides a starter computer system and software to volunteers;
  • Printer Repair, training volunteers how to repair printers;
  • Collaborative Technologies, a consulting service for not-for-profit organizations that goes well beyond simply providing recycled computer technology.

Donations                                                                                                                            Computers- FREE GEEK-PENN accepts computers and computer related hardware in any condition. If you are donating equipment that is known to be broken or a computer older than a Pentium I PC or PPC Mac, we do ask for a donation to help with our processing costs.

There is a $10.00 disposal donation per monitor, working or not, no exceptions (includes computers with built-in monitors).

Time - Whether you want to volunteer here to learn new skills, perform community service, get credit for school or just support the cause(s), we have room for you! Forget all that equipment we handle, our volunteers are our greatest assets.

Money – As we get off the ground we need operating capital. This includes individuals and corporate sponsors.
